There’s an interesting new article in the American Journalism Review about how MSNBC is becoming the liberal alternative to Fox News’ conservative viewpoint.
I think it’s important to give viewers a liberal alternative to what Fox News gives us. It has nothing to do with my own personal politics and everything to do with having both voices out there. We prosper better as a society if everyone has their views out there.
But there’s something that bugs me about the whole leaning political news networks. The title of the article (Talking to themselves) is exactly what my problem is.
People will watch or read the news with which they agree. That means someone with a conservative view is going to watch Fox News and someone with a liberal view is going to watch MSNBC.
That’s fine, except those people are not hearing the alternative viewpoint. If you don’t hear the alternative viewpoint, it’s a little harder to form an intelligent opinion on something.
It’s why we have the Freedom of Speech. It’s to get all of the views out there so we can get at the kernel of truth and make informed, intelligent decisions.
But I know our environment for political news isn’t going to change any time soon. The best thing I can suggest is for people to make sure they watch all sides of an issue before they form an opinion.
