The two San Francisco Chronicles reporters covering the BALCO steroids case never actually sat in jail, but they never will have to now because their source came forward.
Attorney Troy Ellerman came forward to say he leaked the grand jury testimony to the two reporters, who then used the reports as part of a series of articles and a book.
Why is it reporters have to rely on their sources coming forward? Simple problem is we don’t have a national shield law. But why is there such an assault on reporters in the last several years?
It frightens me every day how our First Amendment rights are under attack. If you don’t believe it, look at how many reporters face jail time or are currently sitting in jail.
While we don’t have nearly as many journalists in jail as Cuba (they have 24, we have one), do we really want to have any journalists in jail? Especially if they’re doing their job?
And it’s not like the Committee to Protect Journalists is painting the United States in a positive light.
